Primary healthcareHealth projects on Ometepe IslandImproving the health of a community is one of the first steps towards moving that community out of poverty. Although health care in Nicaragua is improving, it is still concentrated in the main cities. Places such as the island of Ometepe, in Lake Nicaragua, are virtually forgotten when it comes to providing doctors and medicine. There are only a few doctors for the island, covering 30,000 people and hundreds of square kilometres. Nurses are also in short supply and medicines are few and hard to come by. We want to ensure that the people of Ometepe have access to the affordable primary health care that we take for granted in the West. SIFT's health projects
