For SIFT’s Doctor, Sandra Villagra, the most important part of her job is being able to provide high quality care for her patients. She enjoys working for SIFT because it gives her the opportunity to help the people who need it the most.
The cost of medicines at government-run clinics in Nicaragua often makes healthcare unaffordable for the poor. For people living in rural communities on the island of Ometepe access to healthcare is further restricted as the facilities are located in the main towns. Each year Dr Sandra and our team of seven nurses treat around 4,500 patients in SIFT’s health clinics on Ometepe. Patients pay a small affordable fee and receive all medicines that they need for free.
Dr Sandra and her team seek to improve the overall health of their patients by providing community health talks. They have also started targeted support groups according to the needs of the local community. They currently run two clubs for expectant mothers, and a luncheon club for the elderly.
How you can help
Dr Sandra’s work wouldn’t be possible without the financial support of people in the UK. By sponsoring her you will be helping us to continue providing high quality healthcare to the people of Ometepe. We suggest £15 a month, however any amount would be a great help. To start sponsoring Dr Sandra you can either fill in a standing order form and return it to us at the SIFT office, or setup a regular donation via PayPal.
All of our sponsors will receive annual updates about Dr Sandra and her work in our clinics.
