For SIFT’s Doctor, Sandra Villagra, the most important part of her job is being able to provide high quality care for her patients. She enjoys working for SIFT because it gives her the opportunity to help the people who need it the most.
The cost of medicines at government-run clinics in Nicaragua often makes healthcare unaffordable for the poor. For people living in rural communities on the island of Ometepe access to healthcare is further restricted as the facilities are located in the main towns. Each year Dr Sandra and our team of seven nurses treat around 4,000 patients in SIFT’s health clinics on Ometepe. Patients pay a small affordable fee and receive all medicines that they need for free.
Dr Sandra and her team seek to improve the overall health of their patients by providing community health talks. They have also started targeted support groups according to the needs of the local community. They currently run a club for expectant mothers and a luncheon club for the elderly.
